January 9, 2023— This year marks 50 years since the convention that created MARPOL in 1973. To mark the 50 years of compliance and growth in the industry, the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will be hosting a 10-part webinar series throughout the year to celebrate the service and work individuals, communities and corporations embrace to protect the marine environment, increase marine environmental awareness, and support MARPOL compliance. NAMEPA members and partners will explore the transformational annexes and other important environmental topics, which have dramatically lessened maritime’s impact on the environment, by discussing the challenges and solutions they face and look to the future for next steps. The webinar series will kick-off with Annex I on January 18th, 2023.
The Torrey Canyon oil spill in 1967, the largest oil disaster at the time, was one of the key moments that led to the development of the MARPOL Convention (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships). Today, MARPOL covers pollution of the sea by oil, noxious liquid substances in bulk, harmful substances in packaged form, sewage and garbage from ships, air pollution from ship emissions, and regulation of energy efficient. The Convention has evolved through the years, including the 2018 adoption of the Initial IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy to decarbonize the sector as soon as possible before the end of this century.
Webinar participants will explore the Regulations for the Prevention of Oil from Ships by first discovering the history of MARPOL, understand how Annex I protects the marine environment, discuss how the annex has changed over the past 50 years, and investigate proper compliance. To demonstrate their commitment to MARPOL and as industry experts, panelists for Annex I include:
• Ole Christian Schrøder, Director of Environmental Compliance, Scorpio Group
• Valerie Cannon, Environmental Regulatory Manager, Total Marine Solutions (TMS)
• Buddy Custard, President & CEO, Alaska Chadux̂ Network (ACN)
• Gregory Linsin, Partner & Co-Chair White Collar Defense & Investigations, Blank Rome LLP
Additional scheduled topics include:
• Annex II & III – February
• Annex IV – April
• Safety at Sea & Mariner Welfare – May
• Annex V – June
• Annex VI - July
• Ballast Water, Antifouling and Invasive Species – August
